A Twin Spires one-two: Wathnan wins in Kentucky

30th June 2024

Recent purchases Cagliostro and Tumbarumba excel in the valuable Hanshin Stakes.

Around the last mile of the fabled Kentucky Derby course in the $300,000 Hanshin Stakes – a Stakes race sponsored by the Japan Racing Association – Wathnan’s two competitors were to the fore as they crossed the line: Cagliostro holding sway over the strong finishing Tumbarumba.

Twice Graded Stakes-placed as a three-year-old, Cagliostro debuted for Wathnan in the G3 Blame Stakes, only being run down late but holding on to second. Trained by Cherie DeVaux and ridden by Flavien Prat, this was his first triumph at Stakes level. Tumbarumba was running for the first time in the red, old gold and peacock blue, and – needing every yard of this nine-runner, eight-panel affair – was finishing much the best, yet was still resoundingly held. The Brian Lynch trainee delighted connections and will likely step up in trip next time.
