Another day, another double at the Qatar Goodwood Festival 

Wednesday was a day for the fillies, and Exclusive Code secured the third Wathan winner of the week on Thursday, but by the Friday of the Qatar Goodwood Festival it was time for a spot of mixed doubles, with Archivist roaring home in the Coral Golden Mile and Silver Lake posting a comfortable success in the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap.

Carrying joint-top weight, Archivist gave his trainer Hamad Al-Jehani and Wathnan Racing a thrilling victory on the Sussex Downs with his late run down the outside of a competitive field for the valuable mile contest. 

Winning by just over a length under Callum Rodriguez, the four-year-old was posting his second victory of the year, and fourth in total, having triumphed at Meydan back in March.

“I knew that Archivist would be placed very well and, of my three runners, I would have chosen him as the winner today,” said Al-Jehani. “Callum gave him a great ride, which was important in why we were the winners in the end.

“It is really important for us to have a winner at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. We are very happy with the result, for sure.”

Wathnan Racing’s Richard Brown added, “Hamad took this horse to Dubai and did brilliantly with him there. Then to come and produce him to do this – this man is training to an exceptionally high level and it is great for all of the team.”

Archivist had previously been in training with William Haggas before joining Hamad Al-Jehani over the winter. Haggas was quick to congratulate the Wathnan Racing team for Archivist’s latest win and then added his own victory to an increasingly successful week at Goodwood when the progressive filly Silver Lake impressed in the smart fillies’ handicap at the tail-end of the card. 

Ridden by Saffie Osborne, Silver Lake has previously triumphed on her handicap debut over the same 10-furlong distance at Salisbury and, leading the field into the final two furlongs, she extended nicely to beat Lady Dora Mae by three lengths.
