Leovanni stays unbeaten with a decisive win in the Queen Mary
The first great test of a fillies’ speed, it’s been won by some of the greats of the game. Today, it was Leovanni’s time to shine.
Wathnan’s flying filly Leovanni broke sharply, stayed just behind the leaders on the far side in the 24-runner Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, then turned on the after-burners and simply scorched clear. The filly, whose name is Italian for ’like a lioness‘, hardly needed to show her tenacious qualities: today, she was much the best.
Trainer Karl Burke, who was claiming his second Queen Mary in three years, looked on from the Royal Enclosure and said, “From watching it live, it looked very smooth. James said that Leovanni travelled beautifully. She’s got a fantastic mind, this filly. For a breeze-up two-year-old, she’s unbelievable. So relaxed and that will stand her in great stead going forward.”
