Royal Ascot, day one: a close run thing in the Coventry

18th June 2024

Wathnan juveniles beaten in a photo – and older horses run 2-3 in the Wolferton, too.

Wathnan’s once-raced winner Electrolyte, sporting the gold cap, won his race on the stands side – only for Rashabar, racing on the far rail, to cross the line a nose to the good. Wathnan’s Columnist, who had also won on his only previous racecourse appearance, was a short-head away in third, in a blanket finish for the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, the most prestigious six-furlong race of the juvenile calendar so far.

Later in the afternoon, Wathnan’s Haunted Dream and Torito fought a stirring battle for minor honours behind wide-margin Wolferton Stakes winner Israr. The light grey Haunted Dream – a first Royal Ascot contender for Qatari Hamad Al-Jehani – just got the better of this one, having hit the front before the furlong pole.

”I’ve loved him from the moment he came into the yard. A proper six-furlong Group-race sprinter for this year, for sure, and a horse with lots of class and loads of ability.”
